Literacy
This term we will read another Stone Age story called The Great Cave, where we learn about an unlikely hero. We will explore this story using drama and use this to write an ending to a story focusing on how we can use descriptive vocabulary.
We will then use a non-fiction text called Live like a Hunter Gatherer to write a Non Chronological Report about Neolithic hunting techniques. We will continue our focus on using subordinating conjunctions to extend ideas in our sentences, as well ensuring that our writing has a range of sentence types. We will begin to learn about using apostrophes in words correctly for contracted words and to show possession.
Maths
This term, we will be focusing on the following subjects:
Fraction - We will learn about how to recognise a fraction of a shape and how to find fractions of amounts. We will learn about unit and non unit fractions. Children will use pictorial representations and their knowledge of times tables to find 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 3/4 and 2/3 of amounts.
Time - We will build on our learning from Year 1 to learn how to tell the time to and past the hour. We will focus on a quarter to and a quarter past the hour. We will then go on to learn how to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes.
The children will need to be confident with their 2, 5 and 10 x tables. A fun way to practise this at home is to learn some rolling numbers songs. Click on the links below for some ideas.
The children should continue to be logging onto TTRockstars every day. This will really help them to develop their confidence with recall of their 2, 5 and 10 x tables. The children will also now be encouraged to learn their 3 and 4 x tables to support their learning in Maths finding fractions and in preparation for Year 3.
Science
Our topic this term is called The Apprentice Gardener. In this unit we will observe and describe how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants. We will also be finding out about what plants need to grow and stay healthy.
At home, why not try:
Collecting different seeds and comparing the way they look. Draw the seeds and describe them.
Plant some seeds and grow them under different conditions. Which conditions were best for growing?
Try growing some seeds in a see-through jar. Watch the seeds germinate and the roots and plant grow.
History and Geography
In History, we will revisit the Stone Age, moving into the Neolithic period. The children will focus on how historians discovered that early humans became farmers and they will explore the tools used for farming, what they were made of and how they were used. They will also take a look at how farming in the Neolithic Age has influenced farming today.
In Geography we will begin to learn about where food grows around the world. We will discuss different climate zones, and how this influences farming in various countries.
At home, why not try:
Have a look at the packets of food you have in your kitchen at home. What do you notice? Where does our different food come?
