SPELLINGS
SPELLINGS
Spellings will be posted on this page weekly ready for pupils to practise. Please note, some children will come home with different (printed) spellings. These are the ones they should practice.
Children are not always tested on the spelling words in the order printed.
If your child is unmotivated, try playing bingo or even hangman using these words.
In Year 2, spelling books stay at school as children may need to refer to them as a spelling aid/ support during independent writing activities.
Spellings will be tested and marked every Friday, so please do ask the children for their score or ask the teacher if you would like to see their books. Spelling books will be available with other books for parents to view in Meet the Teacher meetings.
Year 2 Common Exception word list
These words are taken from the Year 2 Common Exception word list. Children must know and spell all of these words by the end of year 2.
They cannot be sounded out because they do not follow the usual phonics rules.
They are not explicitly taught at school. You need to practice these at home in order for your child to remember them.
Using them in a sentence or playing a game will help your child remember them better.
You may print these out if you choose, or could write the words with cursive writing for your child to trace over.
Week 1: W/B 8th September 2025
To be tested: Friday 12th September 2025.
These spellings reflect the rules we’ve been learning in class this week. Please support your child by practising the following words daily.
Challenge: Once they’ve mastered the spelling of each word, encourage them to write each one in a sentence to help reinforce their understanding of how the word is used.
