Literacy
This term we will focus on the popular children's author Roald Dahl. Starting off with The Twits, we learn about how to punctuate dialogue correctly, using inverted commas in speech sentences. After making our own version, we will write instructions on how to make Wormy Spaghetti!
Following on from this, we will read all about Minpins in the book Billy and the Minpins. The children will write a non chronological report about the Minpins and the create their very own Minpin and write about it.
Maths
This term, we will be focusing on the following subjects:
Statistics - we will learn about how to draw and interpret data from tables, pictograms and block diagrams. We will be collecting data in class to create our own graphs.
Position and Direction - we will use the language of position to describe objects such as above, below, between, left and right. We will also be describing movement and turns encouraging the pupils to use quarter, half and three quarter turn and language.
Measurement (Mass, Capacity and Temperature) - the children will be introduced to the standard units of measure including millilitres and litres, grams and kilograms, and degrees celsius. We will also encourage the children to solve problems involving mass, capacity and temperature.
In preparation for Year 3, the children should now make sure that they are confident with their 3 and 4 x tables. These have been added to TTRS for the children to develop their confidence. Why not learn using a fun rolling number song? Remember to use your fingers to help you.
At home why not try:
Baking and practising measuring amounts using a scale or measuring jug.
Drawing a map of your house and explore using directional language to find a hidden object.
Carrying out an investigation of your local area or street. Create a tally chart of the different colour of cars you see out of your window and then create a pictogram to represent your data.
Science
In Science this half term, we will continue our learning about animals with a focus on humans. We will learn about growing up and the changes that happen to a human being as they grow. We will also be conducting simple scientific investigations to explore how the body changes as humans grow.
History and Geography
Travelling through prehistory, we will now enter the Bronze and Iron Ages. We will learn about the discoveries of bronze and iron and how life began to change for Bronze and Iron Age settlers. We will also learn about the ways in which Iron Age tribes had to defend their villages from attack. We will work towards bringing all our knowledge of prehistory together, to discuss what things stayed the same and what things changed.
In Geography, we are learning about the continents and oceans of the world. We will learn the names of the 7 continents and 5 oceans. We have previously learnt about the continent of Africa so we will now learn about the other 6 continents, the human and physical features you would see and the climate and animals you would find there. The children really enjoy singing The 7 Continents song which can be found at the following link:
