Below you will find the calendars for each Google Classroom.
The calendars will update daily with the assignments due that day. Please refer to them to assist your students in turning in work on time.
You can also sign up for google classroom summaries, which will provide you with key information about how your student is performing in class and what assignments are coming up. Here is a link to the information on that from Google: Google Classroom Guardian Information
(You may need to be logged into your student's account to see the assignments)
Is sixth grade curriculum really that different from past years?
Yes, sixth grade curriculum is of a much higher rigor. In sixth grade we are not only asking them to remember facts and procedures that they have previously learned, but we are also asking them to use those skills learning new concepts, as well as make inferences, analyze text and concepts, and synthesize and support their thoughts in a purposeful way. This year can be tough due to it being a transition year from elementary school to middle school.
Why is sixth grade curriculum so different?
We are aligned to WSCA, which is an all AP class high school. This means that we are preparing them to have success there, so the rigor of the curriculum and the expectation of what they will produce is much higher.
How can I help support my child during this transition year?
Check in with your student! All classwork/ homework is designed to be purposeful and prepare them for assessments. This is especially true in English. If they are not completing the work - they will not be prepared for the assessment. Frequent check ins 2-3 times per week should be how the year begins, and you can slowly release throughout the year as your child gains more independence and responsibility.
How will my child be prepared for middle school?
Curriculum that is aligned to our middle and high school.
Study skills directly taught such as planners, note taking, and group participation roles.
An understanding of how a 1, 2, 3 will equate to letter grades in middle school.
SEL: Self Reflection, Goal Making, and Working on Appropriate Social Interactions.
An insistence on independence and responsibility.
Growth of their communication and advocacy skills.
Please remember to label lunch boxes, glasses, hats, umbrellas, jackets, and sweatshirts. Do not label shared supplies. These supplies are always made available to all students, but they are stored within the classroom and passed out when needed so everyone has equal access to supplies throughout the entire year.
