Every paper you write should have a main point, a main idea, or central message. The argument(s) you make in your paper should reflect this main idea. The sentence that captures your position on this main idea is what we call a thesis statement.
A thesis statement focuses your ideas into one or two sentences. It should present the topic of your paper and also make a comment about your position in relation to the topic. Your thesis statement should tell your reader what the paper is about and also help guide your writing and keep your argument focused.
The thesis statement is usually the very last sentence of your Introduction
Thesis Statement
TOPIC
The thesis statement tells the reader what the rest of the paper is about. This means that your thesis should state the career that you chose.
PURPOSE
In the Overview of this course you were told: The “provable” component of this paper will be to determine whether the career is a good fit for you. Your thesis should tell the reader if career fits you or if it doesn’t.
SUBTOPICS
A thesis is a fact you want to prove or a fact you want to explain. The rest of your paper’s job is to prove or explain what you just wrote in your thesis statement. Your paper consists of three subtopics (your three main paragraphs) and in those paragraphs you should have discussed whether or not the information you discovered fit your interests, skills, or needs. Your thesis should state your three subtopics and whether or not they fit you.
EXAMPLES:
Becoming a firefighter is a good career choice for me because the job description, requirements, and outlook fit my interests, skills, and needs.
Becoming a firefighter is not a good career choice for me because the job description, requirements, and outlook do not fit my interests, skills, or needs.
