English IV is a project-based course. All of the materials you will need will be available on this website. You can navigate this site by using the navigation bar to the left. If you do not see the bar, click the three lines that appear next to "English IV" in the top left corner.
The project for this course will be a paper. This paper will help you develop important writing skills that you can use in your everyday life. You will develop your ability to get your point across with your writing. This will include sentence and paragraph structure, spelling, punctuation, and word choice. You will also learn how to edit and revise your work.
The topic of this paper is a career field of your choice. This topic is meant to give you a better and more accurate evaluation of a job that appeals to you. You will do some research on this career. You will be expected to show how your career choice is the most appropriate one for you or how you discovered that it is not appropriate for you.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, learners will be able to:
The topic for this paper will be Career Exploration. You will be required to choose a career that you are interested in. You will develop writing that demonstrates a command of standard American English as well as research, organization, and drafting strategies. You should select a specific topic that has a “provable” component to it. Do not create a report that solely gives information on a topic.
The “provable” component of this paper will be to determine whether the career is a good fit for you. As you begin to research, it is okay if you find that the job is not what you thought it was or that it is not a good fit for you. You should still use it as the topic of your paper.
The body of your paper will include three (3) topics:
You will be required to brainstorm, research, and then write drafts on these topics. As previously mentioned, this will not be merely an informative paper. You will be required to include your own commentary on your research findings, analyze and reflect on those findings.
Other Requirements:
The writing process involves a series of steps to follow in producing a finished piece of writing. By breaking down writing step-by-step, the mystery is removed and writer’s block is reduced. Although some of these steps will often overlap, and sometimes you will move back and forth between them, the writing process can generally be broken down into these steps. Throughout this course, you will see this graphic. It will show which step of The Writing Process you are currently on.
On the Resources tab, you will find a Grammar Checksheet. This checksheet includes some of the important things you should look for in your paper before submitting any assignments.
After you submit each writing assignment, your instructor will review it for errors and make notes of things that you could change to make it better. You will greatly reduce the amount of work you have to do in this course if you proofread your assignment before submitting it. Also, if your instructor makes notes on your assignment, apply those notes to future writing assignments.
There will be videos that you will need to watch for this course. They will be embedded within this website, so you don't have to navigate anywhere else.
This course will walk you through each step of the paper, and your instructor will assist you with all of the requirements to make sure you understand what is being asked. As always, please feel free to ask for help or for clarification on any of the assignments - that is what your instructor is there for.
