If you have the time, travelling around Thailand by train is more eco-friendly than flying and an opportunity to watch local life and the beautiful changing landscapes. First class sleeper trains from Bangkok have private cabins with fold-down beds, western toilets in each carriage, air conditioning and staff serving Thai snacks and meals. The first important thing to know about bus travel is that in Thailand you can get almost everywhere by bus. Buses are cheap and are often used by locals who do not own a car or prefer a bus to a train. At the end of the bus route, you can often continue your journey by other means of transportation: songthaews, tuk-tuks, taxis, etc. Buses do have a bit of a bad reputation in Thailand, but there are some good bus companies in Thailand with a good reputation for safety (See below).
