For those looking to buy cars/motorbikes in Chiang Mai and Thailand, these are the general rules:
Anyone can buy a car or motorbike in Thailand, however as with everywhere else you will need insurance and a driving license to drive. See our other pages for details:
Cars/Motorbikes can be purchased new (Straight out of the showroom) or secondhand. There are benefits to both, but do be aware that secondhand prices are usually higher than in other countries.
You will need to register the car/motorbike at the department of Land Transport and get the Green/Blue book (Depends on whether it is a car or motorbike)
When buying secondhand we would always advise to get someone (A reputable mechanic) to check over the car/motorbike before you buy.
For more details please see the articles below:
Of course renting cars and motorbikes is always an option in Chiang Mai and Thailand. This can be done relatively cheaply, however please be aware of these things:
Cars:
Of course there are all the usual car rent companies (Avis, Hertz, Sixt etc), where you can rent cars for any length of time. However, these car rental companies are set up for holiday rents and are best for short-term rentals.
There are companies that specialise in long-term rentals (Per week, month, year), where you will get better value for money. There are bigger companies in Chiang Mai and Thailand that specialise in long-term rentals, but also some more local companies that offer good deals (See below for options)
Motorbikes
You can rent motorbikes in Chiang Mai and Thailand from many places for as little as 150 Baht per day or 2000 Baht per month. However, please take into account this advice:
Always rent from a reputable company, that offer insurance with the motorbike rental.
You will probably not get a good motorbike helmet with the rental bike, we would advise purchasing you own helmet when riding a motorbike.
Do not give your passport to a motorbike rental company, pay a deposit and/or give a copy of your passport.
You can rent small scooter type motorbikes, all the way up to big 1000cc road bikes. Please make sure you know how to ride the bike and are aware of the rules and dangers of riding a motorbike on Thai Roads.
If you want to learn how to ride a motorbike we would recommend the Honda Safety Riding School
Please see below for options for renting motorbikes.
