During 2023 all classes have received weekly instruction in te reo me ona tikanga Māori.
Y7 & Y8 have received te reo Māori as their formal language to learn.
All teaching spaces have begun the day with karakia, mihi, and waiata.
All teaching spaces have incorporated Māori terminology, catch phrases, calls to order and observed tikanga around kai and other ceremonial occasions.
Our school and our Kahui Ako are engaged in formal conversation with our mana whenua, Ngāti Paoa about blessing and sharing the local history we have been given along with aspects of cultural narrative.
We have engaged with Toa Architects to ensue that the cultural narrative is reflected in the new build design for our school.
We have supported our staff to upskill in te reo me ona tikanga Māori and have put significant effort into correct pronunciation of Māori and Pasifika names and terminology.
We are meeting with Ngāti Paoa to korero with regard to our shared aspirations for this kura as it becomes more closely associated with their future marae.
We are engaged in sequential hikoi around our local area where mana whenua can instruct our kaiako in the local history of this land we occupy.
In 2023, as well as engaging in the Manaiakalani PLD mentioned earlier we have been involved in a great deal of professional learning development of different kinds:
Professional Development this year has been focused on Wellbeing and Reading. The Reading work has been led internally by our own staff, deriving direction from the external analysis of the Manaiaklaani Research Team and the development of the RPI.
The Wellbeing PLD and development has been led by the Mitey Team funded by the Sir John Kirwan Foundation. this has been of immense benefit to both teachers and learners.
Our Teacher Inquiry into Practice has been led by the principal, shared with the whole staff and shared publicly on our blogs. Most of these Inquiries focused on Reading, Maths and Engagement.
The Manaiakalani Professional Development was carried out via staff meetings, School Leader PLG's, Principals' PLG's, New to ChromeBook PLG's, Middle Leaders PLG's, Digital Intensives and in class facilitation and support from CoL Teachers and Fiona Grant.
In-class observation and research was carried out by members of the Manaiakalani Research Team along with School Leaders who were trained for this purpose, under the supervision of the Research Team. For more detailed information on this project and its associated professional development, please visit http://www.manaiakalani.org/
We have sent 4 teachers, each term to the Manaiakalani Reading Practice Intensive.
We were not able to send any teachers to Incredible Years, this year.
