Sport and Physical Education Report

We have seen an increase in students participating in more physical activities and sport this year.  Each child receives physical activity lessons that are taken by classroom teachers and  outside providers such as Kelly Sports and local club development officers.  Over half the school have played sport in an organised competition this year.

Physical Education (Kelly Sports)

Teachers organise in their teams,  the fitness activities for the week.  Physical education is not only taught by the classroom teachers but also by coaches from the Kelly Sports programme.  The coaches are paid through Sport Auckland's Tu Manawa fund.  The Kelly Sports coaches lessons during curriculum time over 6 weeks in each term throughout the year.

Lessons are 30-45 minutes long that take place from Monday-Thursday.

Swimming

Our Year 1 and 2 class lessons take place in Term 1.  We paid for seven, half hour lessons for each student to be taught by 2 or 3 instructors from the Glen Innes Aquatics Centre.  Aktive Sport covers the cost of Water Safety for Life Skill lessons for our Year 3 to 6 students.  These lessons were held in Term 4.  Unfortunately, there were no lessons for our intermediate students this year.

Volunteers

48 volunteers

Sporting opportunities are only possible when there is a coach, manager and administration staff.  We are very thankful to have around 50 people who volunteer their personal time to take a team or individuals to play sport.  A special mention goes to our wonderful former students who have come back to coach a team. The list of coaching and management staff is in the spreadsheet below.

House Captains

House captains for 2023 were:

Te Aurere (red):  Elemasi Taiseni, Emeline Ma'upese

Hikianalia (yellow): Lucas Latu, Leonora Motuliki

Hine Moana (blue): Vaha Faleta, Naomi Edmonds

Hokule'a (green): Tevita Talanoa, Khalia Havea

The House Captains are very busy people.  They train and play sport all year round for school teams, with a few playing for local clubs and in other representative opportunities.   Their roles include setting up lunchtime games, assembly duties such as reading out sports certificates, sharing a motivational quote, announcing the winners of the weekly House competitions.  Other duties include creating a house chant, setting up the school picnic games and being a part of the cross country and athletics day organisation.

Sporty Botz Monitors

We have had the largest, most consistent and responsible Sporty Botz monitors this year.  We had 30, Year 5 & 6 monitors in total.  Their duties include taking out sports gear for lunchtime use and returning them back to the shed.

Videographers

Acknowledging Hannah Burton for training and organising a team of Year 6-8 videographers to film sporting events throughout the year.  Hannah edits and creates all of the movie highlights for P.E.N.N and for our school archives.

Ball Boys/Ball Girls

Coming up next week, December 15-17, at Kings College, we are providing ball boys and ball girls for the Global Youth Rugby 7's tournament (formerly the World School Sevens, Under 18 international event). We will be taking a team of about 24 Year 5-8 students due to a larger tournament over 3 days and 4 fields.  This is a great opportunity for our students to serve the wider community and to be inspired to one day play in the same event.

Communication

The following google documents are where staff are informed about how P.E. and sports is coordinated in school:

All information related to physical education and sport is saved in a folder called Sports 2023.

I have the use of a school phone to be accessible for whanau to contact me regarding any sporting queries.

Donations

Throughout the year, people donate rugby boots, togs and sports gear for our students.  Two large organisations to acknowledge:
