Te Reo me ona Tikanga Māori
NE - Yr 6 . Whaea Kiri (Ngakirikiri Kershaw) was able to consistently deliver a quality programme in the classrooms each week to set the teachers up with learning that they can reinforce throughout the week.
Every Team have continued to have mihi and karakia in the daily routines or as part of the various Team Assemblies and gatherings that happen throughout the course of a week. We have continued to develop a number of digital artefacts to support the delivery of this programme. We are currently focussed on refining the planning and learning continuum for this area.
Yr 7/8 classes - Whaea Saf has shared the responsibility for the delivery of this programme with Zac Moran. Our students can confidently mihi and have an understanding of the Tikanga around Mihi. There has been a push for ākonga to deliver their own pepeha rather than a generic one.
Schoolwide waiata - It is great to see that we have continued to build a repertoire of waiata that the whole school can sing confidently. This is an area that we will continue to grow and develop both in the classrooms and at school Assemblies. Our Rangatahi have lead confidently in this space.
'Learn Create and Share'
It has been great to see classes and the various shared learning spaces including an element of tikanga and te reo Māori - karakia and mihimihi have become a part of 'the way' and continue to happen on a daily basis. There has been continued and thoughtful attention being given to our school 'Values' having an associated tag line in Te Reo Māori, and our various weekly korero are frequently delivered in Māori. This year our major theme was 'Keep it Real' Tika, Pono, Aroha.
Kapa Haka
Manaia ki te Rangi - Senior Kapa Haka and Pounamu Kapa Haka
Our Senior Kapa Haka Roopu kicked off 2023 by Opening our Fiafia. They have once again been tutored by Whaea Kiri who has continued to build this group and of particular note is the strength of the Senior Girls who have grown under her tutalage. We are looking forward to seeing them open our Senior Prizegiving again in 2023.
For the first time this group participated in the Matariki Festival which was hosted at Glen Taylor School in Term 3 and performed during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and this included a performance for Pt England Kids. And once again this roopu did us proud performing at the Opening of the Manaiakalani Wananga.
It would be great to see more of our Prefect and School Leaders to be part of this Roopu along with our Rangatahi. Without the opprtunity that Fiafia provides as a performance platform for this group it would be good to ensure that they have events to work towards performances for.
Te Ahorangi Kapa Haka Teams 1, 2 & 3
This group prepared and performed in the Junior Prize Giving. There are a huge number of children in this area of the school who want to participate in Kapa Haka. They are all included initially and then a performance group is chosen from the two practising groups as they come together for their performance at the Junior Prizegiving. It is always wonderful to see the enthusiasm and kaha within this group that grows out of the classroom experience they have weekly. It would be great to see them have a performance opportunity for whanau during the year.
Recommendations for next year:
An update of the Maori Site and making learning both visible and rewindable is a valued resource that supports this - this is ongoing as new Waiata etc. are learnt.
Ongoing development and refining of the Planning for Māori for each year level.
Reactivate the Tataiako Roopu to drive things Māori across the school.
Both groups have the opprtunity to perform for their whanau during the year.
