Dance, Drama, Music - Sounds arts, Visual arts
The arts are powerful forms of expression that recognise, value, and contribute to the unique bicultural and multicultural character of Aotearoa New Zealand, enriching the lives of all New Zealanders. The arts have their own distinct languages that use both verbal and non-verbal conventions, mediated by selected processes and technologies. Through movement, sound, and image, the arts transform people’s creative ideas into expressive works that communicate layered meanings.
The Arts are an integral part of all aspects of life at Pt England and acknowledged as a powerful means of communication. The various aspects of the Arts are Integrated into Inquiry as well as being the focus for a terms learning once a year. In Term 4 2018 'Te Wa Toi' was the Inquiry focus and each team created visual artworks. This culminated in a Schoolwide Celebration and 'Art Trail' to showcase the final products.
Pt England has a very rich culture of live performances, graphic art, cultural performances, visual art intensives and exhibitions and a proud tradition in movie making, participation in Film Festivals and winning film competitions.
Because of the high level of input and expectation around performance and excellence Pt England students are very confident and capable when sharing their learning with others in this way. Students view different groups of peers performing or sharing their work in some creative way on a daily basis on PENN our daily news network. The school culture of learning, creating and sharing has produced confident, creative learners who are ready to take risks and put themselves out there, to be seen and their voices heard.
The variety, the standard, and the regularity of opportunities for sharing (Assemblies, Productions, Fiafia nights, PENN and Prizegivings) has an uplifting effect on whanau and the local community and provides the children with an authentic audience. It has brought a sense of pride and often a sense of amazement at what heights the students can rise to when given opportunity and support.
Graphic art is integrated into all Inquiry learning activities.
Production and Fiafia alternate yearly at the request of the whanau. We held our last Fiafia in Term 1 2018 and saw every child in the school perform. Our next Production is planned for Term 3 2019 and will be an opportunity for children from all levels across the school to be involved.
