Please read on below for an expansion of this model
The Pt England Learning Model used for Inquiry into all aspects of teaching and learning. It is not a linear
model and the components are not always used in the order above. They will be visited and re-visited throughout
the Inquiry. The Learning Model is displayed on the walls of all classrooms/class sites and is used in all planning and
teaching. This fits within the Learn Create Share pedagogy.
Immersion
The first week of each Inquiry is devoted to immersing the students in the big ideas and vocabulary of the study. This
ensures that they all have a basic common understanding to bring to their learning, in the absence of prior knowledge.
Immersion week is full of fun and action.
Questions
A focus question is formulated at the beginning of the Inquiry to set in place the Big Idea then questions arise after Immersion
that guide the specific teaching and learning.
Finding Out
Finding Out is the Learning part of Learn Create Share from direct instruction, independent research, hands on experiences,
interviews, trips, experts, and a wide range of other learning experiences.
Creating
Rich tasks are designed by the teacher/students and guided by a rubric. When the students have enough knowledge, skill and
understanding of the Inquiry they present what they have learnt in a creative manner, either as a digital learning object, a piece
of writing, a presentation, an artwork or the many other ways that their learning can be expressed to satisfy the Learning Outcomes.
Sharing
Finished Digital Learning Objects are then shared with others either on the blogs, on PENN, as a live audience (for dance, drama
or presentation) with the class, at Assembly or for a specific group or purpose. The power of an authentic audience
can be seen in the enhanced quality of the learning objects when a product is viewed, enjoyed, reflected upon and evaluated
by others. Students are taught how to be Cybersmart so this also influences the way in which DLO's are prepared for an audience with respect and safety always in mind.
Evaluation and Reflection
Evaluation and Reflection are part of every step along the Learn Create Share journey. Editing, proof reading, conferencing, buddy discussions, formulating new questions, resetting goals are all integral in developing critical thinking within the learning process. With the final product now published on blogs the students are getting concrete feedback from a wide authentic audience that includes, teachers, peers, whanau and members of the general public. This feedback encourages and promotes enthusiasm for future learning.
As stated earlier the Learning Model is not a linear model and all components are found throughout the Learn Create Share process.
Implementation
Teachers will:
use google docs and sites as their primary tool to enact the planning model
set achievement objectives that acknowledge the expectations of the NZ Curriculum and National Standards
ensure that all data is entered correctly at the expected times
adapt the use of learning tools to suit the learning needs of groups and individuals
move students on a continuum from more teacher directed learning to more learner directed learning
develop rubrics for assessment that are clearly explained to the learner and understood
provide meaningful feedback for student’ work, using a variety of method, to ensure all work is valued and leads to improvement
record assessment on rubrics in such a way that it can be stored in student portfolios/sites/blogs and provide meaningful feedback to parents
display strategies for thinking, problem solving and examples of learning processes sharing on blogs and sites
plan rich tasks which promote higher order thinking and learning through ‘Learn, Create, Share’
plan and teach with the needs of Maori/Pasifika and the agreed approaches in Literacy/Numeracy/Foundations in mind, acknowledge the target students in each academic area and plan with them in mind
