Pt England Policy - Māori

30% of the children at Pt England are Māori and the rest are mostly Pasifika except for approximately 40 students of other ethnicities.

In order to satisfy the needs of our Maori Community and the expectations of the Treaty of Waitangi we have settled on an approach that has worked successfully for nearly 15 years.

A Kaiako is employed by the school on a part time basis and teaches each class for 30 minutes per week covering the objectives of the Curriculum and the local kaupapa. The teachers are required to stay in the room and assist with classroom management and learn alongside the children so that they can reinforce and practise the reo and concepts taught. The contexts for learning usually come from the School wide Inquiry Themes and the content covers both te reo Māori me ona tikanga.

The Kaiako coaches our 3 Kapa Haka groups and these groups, supported by teachers, train throughout the year performing and sharing their learning at Assemblies and various occasions as appropriate.

Toni Nua is responsible for the programmes in the school and supervises and supports Whaea Francis the Kaiako who is teaching the Year 1 - 6 students. Whaea Kelly Tipene teaches the Year 7&8 students and has this Programme is delivered in half hour sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays and uses the Integrated Inquiry as a context while teaching te reo and tikanga.

The Senior School incorporate The Treaty of Waitangi into the Pt England Way Inquiry at the beginning of each year and use the Principles of Protection, Participation and Partnership to discuss their roles, responsibilities and rights. The school Values system reinforces these Principles.

The Maori community is consulted annually. Families@PES meetings are held twice a term and discuss various kaupapa. At lease once a year Whakawhanaungatanga Hui are held to consult and uphold these whanau. This includes an opportunity for full participation in discussions and plans for the direction of the school and includes consultation on Valued Outcome for our tamariki.

Pt England School strongly believes in the three Principles of the Treaty and is fully committed to ensuring equity for all children no matter what ethnic group they identify with. There is acknowledgement of the special place of our Tangata Whenua.

Ka Hikitia - 'Māori students are more likely to achieve when they see themselves, and their experiences and knowledge reflected in teaching and learning'.
