Health and Physical Education @ Pt England
Hauora
NZC Health and Physical Education
In health and physical education, the focus is on the well-being of the students themselves, of other people, and of society through learning in health-related and movement contexts.
Four underlying and interdependent concepts are at the heart of this learning area:
Hauora – a Māori philosophy of well-being that includes the dimensions taha wairua, taha hinengaro, taha tinana, and taha whānau, each one influencing and supporting the others.
Attitudes and values – a positive, responsible attitude on the part of students to their own well-being; respect, care, and concern for other people and the environment; and a sense of social justice.
The socio-ecological perspective – a way of viewing and understanding the interrelationships that exist between the individual, others, and society.
Health promotion – a process that helps to develop and maintain supportive physical and emotional environments and that involves students in personal and collective action.
By the End of Year 8 our students will be working in Level 4 of the Curriculum and will be developing the ability to:
describe appropriately the various factors which contribute to their personal growth and development and general wellbeing including their safety and an understanding of their own personal identity.
learn and understand movement concepts and motor skills along with a positive attitude to accepting new challenges and developing new skills.
grow their understanding and skills in relating to others and interpersonal skills along with their awareness of their own and the identity of others.
grow an understanding and awareness of the factors that influence and contribute to healthy communities and environments and will be able to investigate, describe and access as appropriate.

Healthy Communities
The School Values programme is an integral part of the wellbeing of the students and weekly korero support the Value and the expected behaviour. The Prefects frequently create skits or make movies to help embed the idea or focus for the week and this is reinforced via our daily news PENN.
Our Value for 2019 is - Cooperation and has been given the tagline 'Kia pai te kotahi' ...Better Together
SPORTS TEAMS
This is an area that has grown exponentially in the past few years. Sally Va'afusuaga is our Sports Coordinator and she has two support workers that have dedicated time to ensure that this programme is effective.
In 2018 there were 92 teams playing across 18 sporting codes with 49 Volunteers Coaches (including staff) supporting this programme. Every year this number is growing, giving significant opportunities for our tamariki to develop both social and physical skills, attributes and competencies under the guidance of Coaches and Experts. It also provides them with authentic opportunities to grow as team members and leaders. (see Charter for details)
EVENTS
Camps and Trips provide our tamariki with opportunities to grow and learn in a well structured and safe environment.
The Year 5 and 6's Camp on the school field in Term 1 each year is often the first time that some of our tamariki have spent the night away from whanau and is an amazing learning opportunity. The Year 6's have an EOY Camp at Camp Bentzon on Kawau Island in Term 4 and the Year 8's have a Leadership Camp early in Term 2 each year which supports them in their development, wellbeing and identity as they enter adolescence.
Our Fiafia which happens bi-annually provides every child with the opportunity to participate and contribute to this wonderful event that is a real celebration of our diverse and unique community.
Fitness
This occurs on a daily basis for 10 - 15 minutes and can be incorporated in to Kiwisport or other PE sessions as appropriate. Teams frequently do this collaboratively.
Kiwisport
Details of this extensive programme are in Keeping to the Pt. This is an essential part of our PE/Health Curriculum with teachers
Swimming
Years 1, 2, 7 & 8 swimming lessons (8 sessions) taken by the teachers.
Years 3-6 lessons are funded under Sport Auckland's GAAAP (Greater Auckland Aquatics Action Plan) programme
It's compulsory for all students to participate in swim lessons unless there's a medical issue.
Lunchtime Sports
This provides our tamariki opportunities to play cooperatively and practise both physical and social skills. Teachers are on hand in the playground to tautoko games and sports and the children are provided with a range of equipment.
On any given day there are a number of Sports Practises engaging and providing the opportunity to learn and practise essential skills.
Health Promoting Partnerships
Pt England is a Health Promoting School and takes a holistic approach to the health and wellbeing of all students and work under the principle of Hauora. As a Fruit in Schools School the students receive one piece of fruit each per day and have done so for many years. We are also part of the Milk in Schools Programme that sees the children regularly receiving a carton of milk.
The school tuck shop provides only food approved by the Hearth Foundation and whanau and students are actively discouraged from bringing unhealthy kai to school as set out in the Healthy Eating Policy.
