Population and Resources - Malala Yousafzai
Big Question - To what extent can human societies use natural resources sustainably and reconcile competing perspectives for overall use? (7.1)
Guiding Question:
How can the dynamics of human populations be measured and compared? (8.1)
How can societies sustainably manage waste? (7.3)
Begin to Include "ESS IB Test Review Lessons" (embedded into lessons below)
Do one for practice? - (See p. 97 of ESS Guide - it has a mark scheme guide for a 9-point essay question - Students should know how this applies)
No Official Homework, but review the sections shown below in parentheses.
Last IB class day - Monday, April 28 - Offer a "review session for each class" before May 2 (Paper 1) and May 5 (paper 2)
HOMEWORK - Notes for 1.4, 8.1 through 8.4 (some done in class), Review other chapter 1 sections if needed too.
Lesson 1 - Human Population Dynamics (8.1) April 4, 7
Lesson 2 - Age/Gender Pyramids and Demographic Transitions (8.1) - April 8, 9 (test review sample questions)
Lesson 3 - Sustainability and Resource Use (aside from energy) (1.4&8.2) - April 10, 15 (test review part 2)
Lesson 5 - Humans and Pollution and Waste Management (8.3)(1.5) - April 11, 14 (test review part 3) - Sub Lesson - update as needed for student self pacing
Lesson 6 - Human Population and Carrying Capacity (8.4) - April 21, 22 (test review part 4)
End of year - extra time? Need April 23, 24, 25, and 28 - Overall - Big Problem and Solutions - Must incorporate _____ topics and units.
Good Last Day Video - The Possible Future of Earth
Old exams questions and study time. Lesson Options for extra classes.
1 day - Essay style question planning (refer to review day part 4)
Lesson 4 - Changes of Land Use - Deforestation - Asynchronous lesson during testing week.
Lesson 7 - International Example - Water supply
Need to ADD - Water Security And desalination. Topic 4?
Watch - Bolivia Water Supply
Case Study - Bolivia Water Supply (answer questions at the end of the article)
Lesson 8 - Population trend concerns - Korea population change - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ufmu1WD2TSk&ab_channel=Kurzgesagt%E2%80%93InaNutshell
How common is this story for other countries?
What could overcome some of these challenges?
Lesson x- Bioblitz Planning
Change to an IA style Soil test day along the field at different points - different groups can try different samples at different areas.
Purpose - Plan for a "bioblitz" species collection and population estimates for a local habitat.
Inspiration - Check out the PhotoARK examples. Blending Art and Biodiversity Preservation.
Bioblitz in the field - (Grade for B - Lab Design parts of IA - introduce full IA guide) - Example IAs (Student Examples)
Review the IA - Label each section and draft a write up - Use the Internal Assessment rubric as a guide. Rubric (Complete Context CXT and Planning PLA only)
Select a technique to apply population estimates (what information is needed for this?) for what we find at the tall grass field.
Read - Ecological Sampling Methods
Materials - plastic bags, butterfly nets (to share), a few whiteboards for pictures, cameras (anyone?), guide books (plant, tree, bird, insect, mammal), measuring tape.
Bioblitz - Part 2
Goals - Safely collect, record, and release different species from The Field.
Document with photos and data tables the species that we find in the field.
Use this information to determine population estimates for different species (including the plants).
After collecting data - Write up a lab report (in IA style) that explains what we did and learned. ONLY do the Context and Planning part for a grade.
