Biodiversity - Black Footed Ferret
Rockstar - E.O. Wilson
Unit Theme: What techniques can be used to gather evidence and protect biodiversity in your local environment?
Guiding Question: How do different perspectives affect the decisions we make concerning environmental issues? (1.1)
What causes biodiversity loss, and how are ecological and societal systems impacted? (3.2)
What causes biodiversity loss, and how are ecological and societal systems impacted? (3.3)
How do worldviews affect the choices made in protecting natural systems? (3.3)
Contact - AJ from Natural Areas - Could meet at Puente Verde (walking field trip) - "AJ" achlebnik@fcgov.com
HOMEWORK - Notes for 1.1, 3.1 through 3.4
New Lessons (3.2) - What causes biodiversity loss, and how are ecological and societal systems impacted?
Invasive Species Lesson
Natural Resource Use and Biodiversity Impacts (CPW management practices)
ADD - Walk to a natural area (end of Unit - Cut a grass sample). Wild Ways Video.
Lesson 1 - Species Count Part 1 - Plot Sample and grade water exams (1.1) - Sep 25, 26, 27, 30
Lesson 2 - Species Count Part 2 - Compare Plot Samples (2.5) - Oct 1, 2
Lesson 3 - Simpson's Index to Estimate Diversity (2.5) - Oct 3, 4
Lesson 4 - Biodiversity (3.1) - Oct 7, 8
Here or next unit? - Yes, the emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) is an invasive species. It was introduced from Asia to North America, where it has caused significant damage and mortality to ash trees.
Lesson 5 - Origins of Biodiversity (3.2) Oct 9 (many absences for Ambassadors), 10
the Island Biogeography Simulation - what types of things lead to isolation?
Add - Introduce the concept of Natural Resources here - Big question - How does the unsustainable use of natural resources impact biodiversity?
Lesson 6 - Threats to Biodiversity (3.3) - Oct 11, 14
Lesson 7- Conservation Options (3.4) - Oct 15, 16
Combine with Lesson 8?
Lesson 8 - Local Conservation Efforts - Fort Collins Natural Areas - Oct 17, 21
Lesson X - Local Land Conservation - Need to modify to incorporate this
Lesson 9 - Biodiversity and Species Protection - Gorongosa NP (3.4) - Oct 22, 23 (optional as a sub lesson) OR Could tie in "Wild Ways" video (or add as sub lesson if needed).
Lesson 10 - Black Footed Ferret Case Study Resource Booklet - Oct 24, 25 (optional as a sub lesson)
NEW UNIT - Sustainable Development
Unit Test - Oct 28, 29
- Get out IB Command Terms
- Graded - Do a check about reading notes. (1.1, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4)
Look up - Evolution Earth - Grasslands - Features Soapstone Prairie - https://www.pbs.org/show/evolution-earth/ (look at min 28)
ADD - More hands on activity about drivers of speciation and evolution - Consider the Pepper Moth activity with an article OR the Island Biogeography Simulation
Activity - Pepper Moth Activity - 1/2 of class. Species and Evolution.
In Netlogo - Go to “Files” - “Model Library” - search “peppered moths”
Run a quick experiment - How does the level of pollution in this area affect the phenotype (physical traits) colors of the pepper moths?
Note - when a moth dies in this experiment, it is implied to have been eaten by a bird.
How does this experiment show natural selection? (article for context)
With Time? Go out to the field with bug nets and attempt a quick "bioblitz of insects" and Simpson's index for 2 locations. Have a photo record of species. Take turns catching with nets if needed. 2 Teams.
Add in?? Extra Activity - Habitat Loss (extra link)
