Soil - Soil as a Climate Change Solution - Vandana Shiva (print)
Contact Mr. Moyer about baking soil in order to do "soil carbon test"
Include Reading 4.2 and 4.3 (aquatic food systems)
Unit Question: (ADD somewhere) How are changes in Earth systems affecting the distribution of biomes? (2.4) - Plant Zones Lesson - Links farming and food back to Objective 2. Climate change and productivity - any key foods? Coffee, bananas? What about locally? Wheat, corn? What are alternatives - millet, hemp?
Guiding Question:
How are human activities affecting the stability of soil systems? (5.1)
To what extent can the production of food be considered sustainable? (5.2)
STARTS on Mar 11, 2026 (14 total lessons from here to last day of IB classes - what can be combined?)
HOMEWORK - Notes for 4.3, 5.1 through 5.3
What are Natural Resources? Need to incorporate some 2 lessons - Lesson 4 - Changes of Land Use - Deforestation - Asynchronous lesson during testing week.
Lesson 7 - International Example - Water supply
Need to ADD - Water Security And desalination. Topic 4?
Watch - Bolivia Water Supply
Case Study - Bolivia Water Supply (answer questions at the end of the article)
Lesson 1 - Your Food Choices (5.2) - Mar 11
Lesson 2 - How does Natural Resource Use Impact Earth Systems - Mar 23
Lesson 2 - Food Chains and Productivity (5.2) - Mar 25
Lesson 3 - Aquatic Food Production Systems (4.3) Mar 27
Lesson 4 - Comparison of Farming Techniques (5.2) - Mar 31
Lesson 5 - Soil Analysis (edaphic - soil factors) (5.1) - April 2
ADD to lesson 5 - Figure out a Soil Compaction and Infiltration Experiment - replace the soil triangles (see 4.1.4 to update vocab)
Lesson 6 - Soil amendment and remediation (5.3) - April 6
IB Question Example - Soils
Need to add - What are the inputs and outputs of soil systems? Use nutrient cycles to show this.
If extra time:
New Lessons - Outline
Note - Students should create a "team" file that gives a soil related solution to climate change. Save and share with Ms. Dellany. Lesson 6 - Soils and Climate Change Dellany Lessons (5.3) - April 3, 4 and 5,6
Soil Respiration Lab - Use Oxygen Probes OR should I use CO2 with Soil Respiration based on "local plants"

Context - Watch all or part of Kiss the Ground??? (did the library get the DVD?) This could give some links to how commercial farms impact systems and some of the ways that they can change to become more sustainable. Lot of "regenerative farming" ideas and concepts of soils holding carbon.
