Dear Timnath Band Families,
I hope you're enjoying a restful summer so far! I want to take a moment to share some important information about the Poudre School District Summer Music Program.
While the summer program has been a tradition for many years, I want to emphasize that participation is completely optional—and does not affect your student’s ability to succeed or continue in band.
In fact, at Timnath Middle High School, only about 60% of our students are able to attend due to scheduling, transportation, financial barriers, family vacations, or other commitments. This creates an equity issue: when some students begin the year significantly ahead in instruction, it can create a gap that’s hard for others to bridge. Our goal is to provide every student with a strong, fair, and inclusive start.
It’s helpful to know that the summer music program was originally created decades ago when sixth graders were still part of elementary schools. In 2009, PSD restructured, moving sixth grade into the middle school setting. This shift eliminated the original need for summer instruction, and there is no current data showing that students who attend summer music are ahead of other schools that start band in 6th-grade long-term.
At Timnath, we design our band curriculum to meet every student where they are, and ensure growth and success regardless of summer participation. Your child is welcome, valued, seen, and will not be left behind.

I am back on contract August 6th, and will check emails more frequently then. The website is updated with the supply lists. We will schedule an evening for all beginning band families to meet us and get more information. Enjoy the summer!
