Whittling  a stick with a peeler supports fine motor skills, hand/eye co-ordination and safety awareness. Once the children created a point at the end of the stick we asked the children to collect leaves. This activity lends itself to a range of abilities with some children collecting 5 leaves, some collecting 20 leaves and some children counting in 2's and 5's.
