Lincoln Track and Field Athletes and Parents,
Day 1 of track and field is tomorrow! For those of you who don't know me or have not received an email from me up to this point my name is Eric Dettman, and I am the head Track and Field coach at Lincoln HS. This will be my 12th year with the program and my 8th year as the head coach at Lincoln HS. I'm excited to meet you all at some point and can't wait to get this season started. Year over year we continue to build an incredibly special program here at Lincoln HS and we're so excited to add to that legacy this season.
In order to participate you'll need to be completely cleared by Monday. This means that you're signed up on FAMILYID and you have an updated and current physical. Please take care of this as we don't want to turn anyone away on the first day of practice. We have A LOT of athletes who aren't currently signed up and we are 1 day out. If you are unsure whether you signed up or not, please email me and I will let you know.
Most are probably wondering about the schedule so let's start there. We will practice Monday through Friday from 4:00 - 6:00pm and occasionally on Saturdays but that will be event specific. We will meet at the athletic storage facility found near the start line of the track. Please arrive by 3:45 so that we can check you in and start promptly at 4:00pm.
The schedule for our first week is below. As a reminder, our first official day is March 3rd.
Monday: All athletes will practice at Lincoln HS from 4:00 - 6:00pm
Tuesday: All athletes will practice at Lincoln HS from 4:00 - 6:00pm
Wednesday: All athletes will practice at Lincoln HS from 4:00 - 6:00pm
Thursday: All athletes will practice at Lincoln HS from 4:00 - 6:00pm
Friday: All athletes will practice at Lincoln HS from 4:00 - 6:00pm
Saturday: Distance runners will meet at the Nike Hollister Trail at 9:30am. Sprinters will go at 10:00am at Lincoln HS
We recognize that the first day and first week can be hectic and maybe even scary for new athletes, especially the freshman. If you are unsure of what you are doing, where you should be, or just have general questions please go find a coach. If you're looking for me, I'll likely be the loudest one directing traffic. The number 1 point that I'd like to get across is please don't be afraid to ask questions. There truly is no dumb question and it's likely that the question you're wondering about is the same question as 13 of your peers. We'll start practice with a team meeting, team lap, and then we'll all warm up as a group. From there we'll section off into different groups, jumps, sprints, throws, etc. My number one recommendation is don't be afraid to try something new. We had an athlete a few years ago who was a state champ in the javelin back to back years and decided to try high jump his senior year. He ended up being an all state athlete in that event. My point to sharing that story is you truly never know what you might be best at so try everything, especially in the first week.
Things to bring on the first day
Pants
Full Water Bottle
Jacket
Extra Clothes
Running Shoes
Our team store is officially live!! This means that you can get all the Lincoln Track and Field gear that you could possibly want. Please use THIS LINK to purchase gear. As a reminder, we ask athletes to purchase their own warm-ups. This is done so that they can keep those warm-ups all four years and don't have to give them back. If you click the team store link, the Epic or Showtime top and the Epic or Showtime bottom can be used for the warmups. Additionally we allow kids to wear their own black bottoms for racing. If you need to purchase black bottoms please use the link to purchase those as well.
We will also be partnering with Rush Bowls on Tuesdays for the entire track and field season. We're calling it Track and Field Tuesdays and anyone who purchases a bowl and mentions Lincoln Track and Field, part of those proceeds will go back to the program. This will go on from the time it opens to the time it closes. If you are looking for a great lunch or a post workout snack, please visit Rush Bowl on Jefferson Street.
Hopefully that's answers all questions about our first week but if it doesn't please don't hesitate to reach out. We're really looking forward to another successful season for the Lincoln Track and Field program!
Thanks for all you do,
Coach Dettman
