The Portsmouth School Department is committed to the concept that no otherwise qualified individual with handicaps shall solely by reason of their handicap, be excluded from participation, be denied benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity. (Policy 5411)
This policy prohibits discrimination on the basis of handicap in numerous aspects of life, including employment, education, architectural accessibility, and health, welfare, and social services.

The student assistance counselor operates in cooperation with RI Student Assistance Services. This individual provides counseling and referral services for students experiencing a problem with any alcohol/chemical matters, as well as any other problem or needs of a student. Conversations between students and the Student Assistance Counselor are confidential.
The school psychologist promotes student success at PHS by addressing academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs. This individual works the school to provide a range of services, including assessments, interventions, and counseling, and they collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to create supportive learning environments. Sample responsibilities include student assessment and evaluation, student intervention and support, and collaboration with other professionals in the building.
This specialist serves as a liaison between the home, school, and other community agencies. Working with teachers, parents, school administration, and appropriate community agencies, the social worker helps to identify and solve student problems before they become detrimental to educational or personal experience. Note: Working Papers are available for those who are fourteen years of age and who present a birth certificate and "Intent to Employ" form properly signed by the hiring person and parent, to the School Counseling office.
