At Portsmouth High School report cards are issued quarterly during the school year to inform both students and parents/guardians in order to represent what students know and are capable of doing in a specific discipline/course by the individual student. Report card grades are also used as a variable in determining eligibility for interscholastic sports, extra-curricular activities, and student parking. See Portsmouth High School calendar for the specific dates associated with issuing quarterly report cards. Additionally, students and families should be kept abreast of their standing in a course via regular grade submissions to our student information system, ASPEN. Parents/guardians may view their student's progress throughout the course of the year via the online ASPEN Parent Portal. To gain access to this portal please follow the directions linked below:
All teachers will make known to the students at the beginning of each course the marking procedures and homework policy that will be used for grading in that course. In addition to demonstrating what students know and are capable of doing within a specific discipline, grades are also used to, in part, determine eligibility for interscholastic sports, extra-curricular activities.
Seniors that carry a full year, course average of 89.5 or above will be exempted from taking the final exam in that class with the understanding that said student has already demonstrated subject area mastery.
"No Grade" (NG)
"Medically Excused" (ME)
"Withdraw" (W- Passing; W- Failing; W- Medical)
Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed by multiplying the quality points for each of the student’s grades times the credit value for the course (1.0 for full year courses, .5 for semester courses) and dividing by the total number of credits attempted. Courses designated as honors (H), Advanced Placement (AP), or Advanced Course Network (ACN) classes approved by the state receive one extra quality point for a grade of A, B or C and a “weighted GPA” is calculated. Weighted and unweighted grade point averages are included on student transcripts. For a breakdown of the quality points associated with each letter grade in the context of course designations, please see the tables provided below.
* Please note that final GPA calculations for Senior Recognition (i.e. Class Rank & Top 10 Honors) will take place at the close of Semester 1 of the students' Senior year.
