Portsmouth High School is committed to providing a variety of extra and/or co-curricular activities that afford students an opportunity to expand their interests and develop their talents. Participation in any extra-curricular or co-curricular activity is considered an extension of the school day and the rules of conduct that apply to the normal school day apply to the activity.
Some clubs are sanctioned and supported by the school. That is, an advisor is appointed by the administration to supervise and administer club activities. Clubs in this category are co-curricular and reflect a connection to the Portsmouth High School program of studies. From time to time they may conduct activities during the regular school day with the permission of the principal. In order to participate in these clubs students must sign the Student/Parent Agreement for Participation in Extracurricular Activities and maintain academic eligibility.
Please note that students must arrive on time to school and be present for the entire scheduled school day in order to take part in practice sessions, games, activities, or attend any school functions on that day, and also weekend school sponsored events. Any extenuating circumstances will be reviewed by the building administration.

Other less formal clubs are recognized by the school and allowed to meet on campus during after-school hours with a volunteer faculty advisor. These clubs generally reflect the common interest of a group of students who wish to pursue their interest in a supervised environment after school. Clubs in this category may vary from year to year depending on student interest and the availability of volunteer supervisors. In accordance with the Equal Access Act of 1984 student religious groups are also allowed to meet. In order to participate, students must submit a parent permission slip to the club supervisor.
If a student feels as though the Portsmouth High School club offerings do not include their interests, students are strongly encouraged to propose a new club to the building principal for approval. The steps for proposing a new club are:
Submit a written proposal. (two typewritten page maximum) to the principal that includes the following:
a) Statement of Purpose for the club: What do you plan on doing and how does it relate to the mission of the school?
b) Proposed activities: In addition to meeting, what other activities do you plan on doing with this club? Are there off-campus travel expectations?
c) A list of interested students: Simple list of who is interested in being in your club
d) Proposed club meeting frequency, times, and spaces: Where is your club going to meet? What time are the meetings? What is the frequency of the meetings?
e) Signature of a volunteer faculty advisor: Every club needs a member of the PHS faculty/staff that's willing to supervise your meetings and events.
The principal will then consider the proposal along with its merits and the effect that such a club may have on the educational process of Portsmouth High School. Clubs that bear no connection to our educational mission, jeopardize the health and safety of students or create a substantial disruption to the educational process of the school will not be approved.
If all items align permission will be granted for the club to form and conduct regular meetings and activities. This information will be communicated to both the student liaison and voluntary faculty advisor.
Additionally, student liaisons for each approved club will be provided with an opportunity to promote their clubs and recruit new members at a school-wide Club Fair event that is commonly held in the early fall.
