Sharing Videos

PLEASE NOTE: If you are changing the share settings of a video embedded in Moodle, please use Anyone at the Organisation with the link. The link in this case refers to the Moodle site URL so will be secured by Moodle access. It will also prevent the video appearing in the Everything folder in Panopto.

Sharing folders, giving other users access, and publishing videos is straightforward. This guide shows you how the Panopto share setting works from inside their video storage system. The integration with Moodle synchronises Panopto's folder structure with our system –  so it is organised into the familiar system of faculties, departments and modules. The aim is that you can concentrate on content rather than setting up folders.

Sharing videos within Panopto will probably seem familiar to you because it works in a similar way to sharing files in Google. Also, with our Moodle Integration, you will have automatic access to folders based on file location. For example, you may find a lecturer or Online Course Developer has access to your recording as they have category access or access to the folder directly above it in the structure.

If you have any questions regarding enrolment or access, please contact elearn@port.ac.uk in the first instance.

Under the title "Sign in to Panopto" you will see a dropdown box that offers three routes in to Panopto. For most users it will be simplest to accept the default: UoP SSO.

Press the green "Sign in" button. Log in using your normal university login details. The first time you do this you will be asked to consent to federation of accounts. Press "Yes".

If you have any problems with this, or have forgotten your password, please contact IS for assistance (servicedesk@port.ac.uk)

2 . Invite People

In your video library, hover over the video you want to share and click on the Share icon. This will open your sharing options

In the Invite people area, start typing the name or username of a person you want to share with and a list of suggested users will appear. Select the correct person

You can add additional names or save the changes to share with just one person.

You can add additional names or save the changes to share with just one person.

Before you save, you have the option of adding a message for the person you are sharing with.

Select Send and save changes to share the video and to send the person an email notification that includes your message letting them know the video has been shared.

You can see that the person now appears in the list at the top.

3. Share with a Wider Audience

You can also share the video with a wider audience. Click on the button under Who has access to change the sharing option.

Note: a video inherits sharing permissions from its parent folder. A user may adjust this sharing permission to be more public than the parent folder setting, but not more private.

Specific people: This option allows you to share the video with specific people as viewers.

Anyone at your organization with the link: Choosing this option will enable viewing access for anyone who can log into your Panopto site and has the direct link. If the video is placed into a Moodle site, that site becomes the link

Anyone at your organization: This option will enable viewing access for anyone (staff or students) who can log into your Panopto site and will make it appear in the Everything folder.

Anyone with the link: Choosing this option will enable viewing access for anyone on the Internet who has the direct link; no sign-in is required.

Note: eLearn and your faculty Online Course Developers can alter these settings at any point.

Once you have selected the best option for your video, click on Save changes to share the video
