Panopto can add ASR (automatic speech recognition)-generated captions to your recordings and uploaded videos. It is a requirement that all new recordings in September 2020 have captions available.
Note: machine-generated captions are not (currently) as accurate as human transcription – but they might be accurate enough for most purposes. If you require 100% accuracy then you have the ability to edit the captions.
This page outlines the process of importing ASR captions into a video using the editor, so you can edit them. ASR captions are not available in the editor immediately after a video has been uploaded and processed: the captioning can take up to 24 hours for a video that is longer than an hour in length. We do not recommend that you create videos of such a length.
Select the session for which you want to manage the captions and press the Edit button. This opens the Panopto Editor.
Select Captions from the left-hand side of the editor, and then click the Import captions drop-down.
If no captions currently exist for this session, import the machine-generated captions by clicking Import automatic captions.
This is what the drop-down will look like if captions already exist for the session.
If your captions exist and have been processed successfully, you will be able to edit each individual caption by clicking the three dots next to the caption and choosing Edit.
You can completely delete the caption by clicking the bin icon.
Note: At any time while making these edits, you can press Shift+Space to play/pause the session playback, while editing captions.
Once you have imported/edited your captions, commit the changes by pressing the Apply button on the top right of the Editor.
