Pre-Induction Week
Things you need to know:
Welcome to Portsmouth pre-arrival Programme
A pre-arrival programme delivered to all new UG and PGT students with a focus on helping students make connections and build friendships to foster a
"sense of belonging".
The programme consists of the following components:
Welcome messages from students and the VC.
An invitation to join the university’s Discord chat server, where new students can virtually meet each other.
Access to three online learning Moodle modules: Transitioning to University; Learning in Higher Education; Wellbeing for Learning
Early access to induction timetables
An online treasure hunt (designed to incentivise students to engage with the content)
Two Micro-learning courses delivered to student mobiles via text message. The topics covered are consent and bystander training.
Level: New Starters
Course Specific Transition/Induction web pages hosted on the University’s Website
All new students will engage in a pre-arrival programme. This will be delivered via a series of emails and also hosted on MyPort. The content provided in the programme will focus on information that students need to know before they arrive on campus, with an emphasis on developing students’ sense of belonging. It will also include signpost links to various student support services.
MyPort will host induction timetables for each course. Students will receive emails directing them to this content.

Course Specific Moodle Pages
All courses have a course-level Moodle page which will be made available to both new and returning students, before the start of the academic year (in early September).
Where the University website induction/transition course pages provide important practical orientation information that students need to know before they arrive, these Moodle pages should be the place where students begin/continue with their learning and engage with their course.
Course teams should add content to these pages that will stimulate students’ curiosity to engage with learning and also build confidence in their capacity to study at HE-level.
Course teams should organise who is responsible for maintaining/monitoring sections of these sites.

Top Tips for Blended Learning Success Animation and Guide for Students

It is available on Moodle course pages.

Examples of Good Practice:
Building connections with classmates, teaching staff and the wider University community.
Opportunities could be provided for new students to engage with existing students and staff (“Getting together events”). Ideally, these would be organised at a course level, but School or even Faculty-level would suffice.
Maybe you could organise a Q&A event for new students with a panel of existing students (possibly student reps)?
Do you have existing course social media sites which new students can join? Links to these sites can be added to the course induction web pages.
