The focus of development on placement three is multi-disciplinary team working, in addition to developing clinical skills. By the end of the placement students will be expected to have a good understanding of members of the multidisciplinary team, be able to recognise when patients may benefit from input from different team members and be confident to communicate with different MDT members.
In addition to that described for the previous placements, students will have the following knowledge and skills –
A greater understanding of the biopsychosocial influences on health.
An understanding of different treatment techniques employed by physiotherapists including hands-on manual techniques, remote treatment methods, exercise and electrotherapy.
An understanding of health promotion, health behaviours and theories of behaviour change.
An understanding of the different MDT members they may encounter on placement, such as occupational therapists, speech therapists, pharmacists, nurses and doctors.
An understanding of how physiotherapy fits within a wider MDT, when physiotherapy may work best alongside other professions or when physiotherapy may not be appropriate.
An understanding of the importance of outcome measures and some common outcome measures.
A greater appreciation of the role of research in physiotherapy and healthcare more widely.
