Homework
Homework in first grade is about reviewing what has already been taught in the classroom and most importantly, developing responsibility in our children. The students are responsible for getting the assignment out of their mailboxes and putting it into their Take Home folders. The home folders will be coming home on a daily basis. It will contain announcements, completed assignments and homework. It is very important to go through the folder with your child each day and return it to school. When homework is assigned, it should not take your child longer than 10 to 15 minutes to complete. It is important that the children engage in free play and have quality time with their families when they are not in school.
The following is an explanation of typical first grade homework: Once we have settled into our Reading Workshop routine, “Good-fit” books will be assigned. The book will be sent home in a “Book Buddy” bag and must be returned the next day. Math Homelinks will be sent home two or three days each week as they correlate with daily lessons. The math “Homelinks” should be returned the next day. A Fundations (phonics) worksheet will be sent home one or two nights a week. There might be days that a child’s homework is simply to read the book that was sent home.
I devote more time to instructional planning; therefore, homework will simply be checked for completion and to respond to any comments/questions from parents. The homework assignment will not be graded. Thank you for your help!
Sincerely,
Kerry Hannam
