Mentorship Updates!

Delta Iota Chi conducts the Mentorship Program. Members are encouraged to apply for a partnership, whether as a mentor or mentee, to collaborate on an individualized experience. Both parties are invited to set expectations regarding the desired study material and scheduled meeting times. This semester, Delta had 20 students sign up for the program.

One day as nurses, we will need to ask questions to receive answers unbeknownst to us prior to our inquiry. Some may view this as a lack of preparedness or knowledge when in reality, it is a sign of respect. Not an easy thing to do, admitting to the unknown can be daunting and rather unsettling. Doing so goes to show how passionately our students care about doing right by their patients and themselves. Affirmation for mentees: Be proud of your acceptance of help.

Many nursing students believe clinicals to be an invaluable experience during their time at PLU. Nothing prepares a future nurse more than to provide care to patients, collaborate with coworkers, and manage a medical setting all prior to obtaining licensure. I often hear preceptor nurses mention something along the lines of, ‘Nursing school teaches information, nursing practice teaches how to critically apply such’. The mentor program is an awe-inducing moment where these two worlds collide. Nursing students residing in cohorts further into the program have the opportunity to provide study strategies, self-care techniques, and other resources otherwise not conclusively taught; all the while, participating in the Teach-Back Method which further solidifies the knowledge gained from educational and clinical settings. Affirmation for Mentors: Be proud of helping myself by aiding others.

We are specifically searching for Junior IIs and above to pair with a brand new nursing student to be their mentor. The incoming student will be in the mentorship program for the duration of their first semester, and as a mentor, you can have up to 2 mentees if you prefer. This is a great way to build leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. In addition to enhancing these skills, you can earn 1 Delta point per student per semester.
