Most Zulu warriors were not professional soldiers but they were formidable fighters. Each group of soldiers had different identifying features, including jewellery or headdresses. More senior officers and leaders in the army would have paler coloured shields to be easily recognised in battle. A warrior would usually carry his shield with an Assegai spear and Knob-Kerrie club.
The above right-hand image shows a warrior in full regiment. The upper body is covered with cow tails, as are his shins. The kilt and headband are made from the skin of an animal. His head is decorated with ostrich and crane feathers.
Contrary to popular belief, the Zulu army did have firearms bought from traders or looted from their enemies after a battle. Around 60% of warriors carried a rifle but they were not highly trained in using them.
