Most soldiers in the British army infantry wore recognisable red coats. Artillery units would wear distinctive blue coats. They would protect their head with a Pith helmet. This was a lightweight, cloth-covered helmet with a large dome and a peaked rim designed to shade the wearer's eyes from the sun.
Typically they were armed with a rifle which was often fitted with a bayonet: A sharp 21-inch blade that was used in close combat with the enemy.
