During the early 19th century, afternoon tea began rising in popularity. Tea was a popular drink for most members of society, but the wealthy used it as an opportunity to use a whole host of accessories. Most had a set of matching teacups, teapots, saucers and sugar pots which would be laid out on fine linen tablecloths when it was time for afternoon tea.
Ceramics were decorated using transfer-printing. This allowed for intricate and detailled designs.
