Pianos were an expensive instrument to own. Therefore during the Victorian period, owning one was a sign of wealth and status. Women who could play the piano were considered more attractive and desirable, though they weren't encouraged to play professionally.

Pianos became a common feature of public places and would be played to gatherings of people for entertainment.
