Unit ABCs Goals

Unit ABC-1: Engagement in Mathematics

Goals - At the conclusion of this unit, participants will be able to:

  • Experience a grade level/span mathematics lesson to more deeply understand the mathematics.

  • Use this experience to think deeply and reflect on how we are engaging our students in this type of math learning, and how that engagement could support the development of expert learners who are purposeful and motivated.

  • Make plans for translating deepened knowledge about grade level math content and the engagement guidelines to improve instruction and learning outcomes for students.

Unit ABC-2: Representation in Mathematics

Goals - At the conclusion of this unit, participants will be able to:

  • Experience a grade level/span mathematics lesson to more deeply understand the mathematics.

  • Use this experience to think deeply and reflect on how we are providing our students with options for representation and how those options works to develop expert learners who are resourceful and knowledgeable.

  • Make plans for translating deepened knowledge about grade level math content and the representation guidelines to improve instruction and learning outcomes for students.

Unit ABC-3: Action and Expression in Mathematics

Goals - At the conclusion of this unit, participants will be able to:

  • Experience a grade level/span mathematics lesson to more deeply understand the mathematics.

  • Use this experience to think deeply and reflect on how we are providing our students with options for action and expression and how those options works to develop expert learners who are strategic and goal directed.

  • Make plans for translating deepened knowledge about grade level math content and the action and expression guidelines to improve instruction and learning outcomes for students.

Units 7&8 Goals

Unit 7: PDSA to Support All Students’ Math Achievement (Part 1)

Goals - At the conclusion of this unit, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the phases of a PDSA cycle by participating in a sample activity.

  • Develop a change idea to implement.

  • Plan for a test of a change idea by recording the change; the detailed plan; brainstorming learning questions; and making predictions and identify data to collect to test predictions.

Unit 8: PDSA to Support All Students’ Math Achievement (Part 2)

Goals - At the conclusion of this unit, participants will be able to:

  • Record the results of the plan they implemented from Unit 7, compare what happened with predictions, and record what they learned.

  • Use tools (e.g. Impact-Effect Matrix, Stages of Testing) to consolidate and examine what they have learned from acting on a change idea. Use this information to describe any modifications and/or decisions for the next cycle.
