Kindergarten Library Class

(1) Week of September 1 and September 7, 2020

Essential Questions: What is a library? What is a Library Media Specialist? How do we behave during library class? What are the procedures when we enter and exit the media center? How does library look different this year?

“I Can” Statements: I can explain what a library media center is. I can explain how students should act in the LMC. I can explain what a Library Media Specialist does.

Lesson Plan: Students enter media center and sit on carpet in front of the book thrown. Introduce myself and talk about what we will be doing in media class this year. Discuss social distancing expectations, bathroom procedures, drills, etc. Read Back to School Tortoise by Lucy M. George (or watch it here). Discuss with the students any worries they had about coming back to school. Why was Tortoise worried? Show students which tables they will sit at and give them their numbers for their seats and supplies. (This does not apply to our virtual students.)
If time allows, watch The Library Doors by Toni Buzzeo (or view it here) on the Clevertouch. Remind them that they will learn how to use a shelf marker and check out the first library book next class. Right before the students leave, tell the students to be brainstorming ways they can properly care for library books and be ready to discuss it next library class.

2) Week of 9/21

After we've check books in and out.
I will ask the students these questions:
Have you ever been called a mean name? How did it make you feel?
While watching
today's story I want the students to think about how the monster in our story feels. (Distance learners can upload a video answering these questions.) I've also included a worksheet that has different monsters on it for them to color. Just like us, no two people are the same, we all look different.

3) Week of 10/5

After we have checked students' books in and out, I will ask the students to look outside. I'll ask them if they've noticed any changes outside recently. I've noticed the leaves changing colors, at times, the weather feels cooler, and when I'm driving in the car, I see a lot of my neighbors with pumpkins in their yards. These are all clues that we have entered the season of fall. Fall can also be called Autumn.

Today in library, we are going to read two books. One book is fiction, which means fake and the other is non-fiction, which means real.

After students have watched both stories (distance learners will be asked to send me a video telling me about the book that they think is fiction/fake.) I will ask students which book was fake. They will also answer these questions: What color were the dog's spots in this book? What colors are acorns, leaves, and pumpkins? Lastly, how do you know it's fall?
