2nd Grade Library Class

1) Week of 9/7

Welcome Back!

Due to Covid and taking extra precautions to keep students safe, I have added classroom jobs. The first class will be spent going over these class jobs, as well as other old and new expectations. If time allows we will read a story together and discuss it.

Book check out and care begins next class.

I CAN follow directions which will help keep myself safe.

I CAN remember seating and volume level expectations from last year while in the library.

I CAN demonstrate procedures learned from last year.

2) Week of 9/21

We will be reading the story Quit Calling Me a Monster. This is a fictional book. Student will be asked if they can remember from last year what fiction means? I'll give them a hint: FICTION MEANS... _ _ _ _! And non-fiction means real. We know monsters are not real and that is one of our clues as to why this is a fictional story, but there are ideas in this book that are realistic. For example, I will ask students if someone ever called them a mean name. That is something that can happen in real life and while they look at our story Quit Calling Me a Monster, I want them to be thinking about how they are alike and different from the main character in our book, Floyd, who just happens to be a monster.

When we're done reading the story, they will work on the worksheet. This worksheet has a fancy name called a Venn Diagram and Venn Diagrams help us to organize our thoughts, ideas, and help us realize differences and similarities.

3) Week of 10/5

This week we are reading the silly and cumulative book "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves". We will discuss what the word cumulative means and how all of the items the old lady is eating end up having significance because when she sneezes the scarecrow is the end result. Students will talk about what they liked and didn't like in this story and think of other books that they've read that are cumulative. It's important for students to reflect and realize the kinds of books they enjoy.

I CAN follow new library procedures.

I CAN choose a good fit book at my guided reading level.

I CAN tell you about books I like to read for fun.

I CAN read a book I enjoy.

The children, desperate to keep their beloved pet, try everything to rid Hally of her stinky stench. They take her for a breathtaking view, a movie that would leave her breathless, and a ride on a roller coaster that would make her lose her breath, but Hally's putrid panting persists! Only a miracle could save her now!
