1st Grade Library Class

1) Week of 9/7

Welcome Back!

Due to Covid and taking extra precautions to keep students safe, I have added classroom jobs. The first class will be spent going over these class jobs, as well as other old and new expectations. If time allows we will read a story together and discuss it.

Book check out and care begins next class.

I CAN follow directions which will help keep myself safe.

I CAN remember seating and volume level expectations from last year while in the library.

I CAN demonstrate procedures learned from last year.


2) Week of 9/21

Students will think about how our main character Floyd Peterson feels while reading the book Quit Calling Me a Monster. We will go over character traits of Floyd and then fill out the worksheet where they will be expected to draw and color a friend for Floyd.

Students will also have time to check out a 'good fit' book and a 'for fun' book and enjoy some quiet reading time.

I CAN choose a good fit book at my reading level.

I CAN follow new library procedures due to Covid-19.

I CAN identify rhyming words from a story that was read to me.

3) Week of 10/5

This week we are reading the silly and cumulative book "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves".

While reading this story, students will look for these rhyming words (as well as think of their own):pumpkin/bumpkinmope/ropesay/haypole/roll

All of the items the old lady is eating is fitting for fall, but I will also ask students what they think she would eat if it was winter or summer?

When we finish the story, students will fill out an activity that has them match up rhyming words and characteristic traits of the old lady.

4) Week of 10/19

The next time we will have library class it will be November, so today we will read one of my favorite Halloween books: Creepy Pair of Underwear by Aaron Reynolds.

Prior to reading the books we will talk about things that 'creep' us out or make us afraid. After we've read the book we will have a retelling discussion then complete the worksheet. We will also discuss the book the author created prior to Creepy Pair of Underwear called Creepy Carrots and compare and contrast both books.

I CAN retell stories, including key details, and deomonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.

I CAN compare and contrast the adventure of a character in two stories.

I CAN choose a good fit book.

5) Week of 11/2/20

This week we will be reading the book The Littlest Pilgrim. Mini is the littlest Pilgrim in her village. She is too little to sew, bake, and fish. As we read the story we learn Mini may be too little to do many things but she is not too little to make a friend. We will discuss if our first grader friends have ever felt like Mini before.
After our discussion and students check out new books, students will fill out a pilgrim activity.

Week 6
11/16

Students will be encouraged to check out at least one good fit book and one to two 'for fun' books. Students will enjoy some quiet reading time and How to Catch a Turkey will be our main focus today. After we've read the book students will fill out the below activity.

Week 7
11/30

Students will bring back their books and be encouraged to check out at least one 'good fit' book. They will enjoy some quiet reading time. Next we will be reading the book How to be a Lion. We will watch the book on the CleverTouch with the author reading it to us. If time allows we will fill out the below activity.

Week 8
12/14

This is our last class before Winter Break. Students will bring back their books and check out new ones. We will read Pete the Cat Saves Xmas. We will discuss the book including our favorite parts and try to retell the story in the order it was read. If time allows we will complete the below activity.

I CAN read along with a story that is being read to me.

Week 9
1/4/21

This is the first class since winter break. Students may want to take a bit longer time checking out new books. (They will also bring back books.) Once everyone is checked out we will read two stories and compare them with a Venn Diagram. Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett and Goldilocks and The Three Bears.

I CAN compare two books and look for similarities and differences.

I CAN tell you which book I liked best and why.

I CAN check out a good fit book.

Week 10
1/18/21

Students will bring back their books and check out new ones, then enjoy some quiet reading time. After everyone is checked out we will watch The Story of Martin Luther King, Jr. on the CleverTouch. We will discuss the book in great detail by completing the below activity as a class.

2/1/21

The week of 1/25 is Kindness Week and to honor that week we will read the book Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon. After we discuss the story and brainstorms characteristics about Molly Lou, we will fill out the below web. Students will also bring back their library books and check out new onesl

Week 12
Week of 2/15/21

This week we will be reading the story That is Not a Good Idea. We will analyze two of the characters in the story. We will also bring back and get new books. One of these books will be at our reading level.

Topic 13
Week of 3/1/21

This week in the library we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday and Read Across America Week. We will be reading If I Ran the Zoo. We will discuss the book and other books we enjoy by Dr. Seuss and if time allows we will write about what kind of pet we would pick if we could pick any kind we want.
