Topic 1

W/O: 8/31 & 9/7


I am going to have students read/watch the book AMELIA BEDILIA FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. While they might not be physically here in the classroom at this time, they are finally here in my Google Classroom. When they have finished reading/watching the book, they will fill out the worksheet and upload to me.

Topic 2

W/O: 9/21 & 9/28

During library class this week, we are going over many different kinds of genres. Students will watch the PowerPoint presentation, then click on and fill out the PDF (found in Google Classroom) so I know they understand the different kinds of genres we are discussing. By filling out the "What Do You Like to Read?" worksheet I will know what books are of interest to them.

I CAN use the CleverTouch's tools appropriately and respectfully.


I CAN navigate a PowerPoint presentation.


I CAN tell you about three kinds of non-fiction genres.


I CAN tell you four or more kinds of fiction genres.


Topic 3:
W/O: 10/12, 10/26, & 11/9,

Students will come into the library and follow our (newly established) routine for bringing back and checking out books. While waiting for the timer to sound, students will have checked out and enjoy some reading time.
We will briefly review the prior class's genres we discussed and will focus this class and the following two classes on the Golden Archer Award winning book "Holes" by Louis Sachar. This book will show students a book in the magical realism, mystery, and adventure genres. While students follow along and contribute to reading this book aloud, we will also fill out a story map which can be found in Google Classroom.

I CAN categorize books by their genre characteristics.

Topic 4:
W/O: 11/23

This week we will be reading, comparing and contrasting two books. "Thank You, Sarah: The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving" and "The Thanksgiving Door" Students will recognize and ponder the themes of both books, then discuss how the books are similar and different.

I CAN compare and contrast the overall structure of: events, ideas, concepts, or information.
I CAN analyze multiple texts on the same topic by describing similarities and differences.

Topic 5
12/17

Today we will be reading the story The Trees of Dancing Goats. This will be half of the grade's last library class before winter break and this is a great story to read for this time of year. It teaches the students to put themselves in another person's shoes as well as learn about someone that is different for them. While this is a picture book, this is at a 4/5 grade reading level.

I CAN compare the customs of Hanukkah and Christmas.

I CAN retell a story in correct sequence.

I CAN responsibly use technology to access a book online.

Topic 6
Weel of 12/21

This is a short week before winter break and only half the grade has library class. Students will bring back their books, get new ones, enjoy some reading time, and we will read Pig the Elf. After we have a quick discussion we will create this fun ornament.

Topic 7
1/11

Students will bring back their books and check out new ones. They will read until everyone is checked out. In honor of MLK, Jr Day, we will read Martin's Big Words: The Life of Martin Luther King, Jr.. We will use the below image (Lesson 1) as our discussion guide and each student will create a word collage.

Topic 8
1/25

Students will bring back their books and check out new ones and read until everyone is checked out. It is Kindness Week and to celebrate we will read the book: The Invisible Boy. We will discuss this book and how it applies to Kindness Week and even our own lives. If time allows we will fill out the story map.

Weeks of 2/8/21 & 2/22/21

Students will be introduced to the short story Scouts Honor by Avi. We will discuss what a short story is and isn't. We will take turns reading Scouts Honor, then have a class discussion and answer comprehension questions.

This is students' first week back from spring break. We will read the story What if There Were No Bees? then complete and discuss the book and below activity. Students will also have time to look for new books and enjoy quiet read time.
