Project Impact STEM Academy educators collaborate to develop, implement, and improve high-quality STEM learning activities.
Teachers meet every July to construct and iterate their grade-levels PBL units with a focus on STEM. Each quarter teachers meet to discuss and record what went well and what they would change next time. To view the grade-level driving questions and examples of final projects, click here.
Teachers meet weekly on Wednesday afternoon to collaborate and learn. On PLC days teachers work in their grade bands or in their content areas, depending on the focus of the week.
Examples of PD that occurs during the school year include:
February 2021 - English as a Second Language Learner Training
March 2021 - CPI training
The focus of PLC time during the 2021-22 school year has been on RTI Reading PowerUp! and Math PowerUp! AND Project Based Learning. Here are some examples of PLC work on PBL units, these documents are living documents that are updated quarterly by the building teams and specialists.
Common prep periods and building structures provide opportunities for collaboration and integration of PBL units.
Making sure that all students are at grade-level or beyond is a priority for Pi STEM. All students K-8 participate in math RTI (Math PowerUp!). Grades K-6 participate four days a week and 7-8 participate one day a week. Math PowerUp! is a time to fill knowledge gaps OR grow beyond grade-level.
We increase the student-to-teacher ratio by bringing in parent volunteers and involving specialist teachers in PowerUp! time.

When students get behind they are invited to attend ASAP hours on Wednesday afternoon. During ASAP hours they get additional homework help from our para professionals or parent volunteers. This year, due to COVID we have extended ASAP hours to the primary grades for additional RTI assistance in reading. We have a certified teacher, paras, and parent volunteers that assist with Primary ASAP hours.
We are dedicated to teaching reading methods that are consistent with the Science of Reading. However, the challenge that comes with this is in making sure that all teachers are trained on the Science of Reading methods. We have joined Idaho's Cultivating Readers project to ensure that our teachers get this important training and feedback from individuals that are trained in reading methods that are consistent with the Science of Reading. This year our Kindergarten teacher, Primary Reading teacher, and Primary-level ASAP Teacher, our Special Education teacher, and our Executive Director are all members of the Cultivating Readers program. As part of this program, teachers observe each others teaching and provide feedback on their methods. Next year we would like to expand this opportunity to all of our Primary-level and Elementary-level teachers and paraprofessionals.
