Students have been learning about the Greek definition of beauty (order, pattern, symmetry, form). We have discussed that our modern ideas of beauty lean more toward what we can see with our eyes, rather than these ideals. Even in what we see with our eyes, the face has a certain symmetry. It has been a subject of study that persons that are widely considered beautiful have a great deal of symmetry in their appearance. So, perhaps, we lean on these Greek ideals more than we realize.
This week we will continue studying the composer George Frideric Handel. Last week we discussed the differences between the instruments of the Baroque orchestra, and our modern day orchestra. On Thursday, we discussed 3 churches in London during Handel's life, and how they were important. We will have an open note, cumulative quiz on Monday.
In addition to the composer's life, and the changes to the orchestra, we will explore the form of the dance suite (Water Music) and learn what a "hornpipe" is. (It's not what you think.) We will also discover how the oratorio form was invented (think Handel's Messiah), and watch a video to discover how oratorio is different from opera.
