About this Event

Participants will learn about Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs).

This workshop will introduce participants to course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs). CUREs are a high-impact practice that can be used to integrate community-based and/or industry relevant research projects and/or work-based experiences into your existing STEM curriculum. You will hear from faculty who have received STEM-CURE funding and support to pilot and implement CUREs in their courses. Participants will also hear from their students and community partners. Presenters will also discuss evidence-based instructional strategies to create inclusive STEM courses and research experiences.


Presenters: This workshop will be conducted by the National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM-CURE grant team, including the STEM-CURE student mentors and community partners. The team will showcase CUREs piloted in the first three years of the grant. Presenters will include Dr. Robin Cotter, Dr. Anna Marti-Subirana, Dr. Elena Ortiz and STEM-CURE faculty who have developed CUREs during the last three years at Phoenix College, Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Gateway Community College, Estrella Community College and Mesa Community College.

9:00-9:30am - What are CUREs? How do they promote equity and inclusion in STEM?


9:30-10:00am - Sample CUREs: STEM-CURE Project showcase hosted by STEM-CURE students, faculty and community partners


10:00-10:20 am - Past STEM-CURE faculty present “How to Assess Research Progress & Instructional Goals” with examples


10:20-11:00am - Next steps: Group discussion of potential CUREs followed by a presentation on the application process for funds to develop a CURE

Participants will learn about Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs).

Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) are a high impact practice that integrates research into the curriculum. CUREs involve the use of scientific and discovery-based practices to research questions relevant to key stakeholders in industry, government agencies, or the local community. CUREs have been shown to increase students' sense of belonging within the scientific community and improve their communication and problem-solving skills through collaboration. Through cross-sector partnerships with industry, CUREs also seek to improve workforce readiness and promote interest in STEM careers among two-year HSI students.

Through this workshop, MCCCD faculty will learn about the benefits of CUREs from faculty who have implemented them in their own STEM courses, from students who have participated in the CUREs, and from community partners who have collaborated on CURE projects. The workshop facilitators will guide participants on how to use evidence-based instructional strategies to develop and implement community-based or industry-relevant research projects into their own courses. We will also discuss activities to make the STEM classroom more inclusive, and showcase student research projects through a virtual poster session. Through this workshop we hope to recruit faculty interested in integrating research into their courses and show them how they can apply for funding to develop their own CUREs.
