The Thespy Awards recognize student excellence in 21 categories of theatrical performance, technical theatre, writing, and filmmaking.
The Thespys recognize the highest level of achievement in performance, technical theatre, playwriting, and filmmaking.
Students participating in Thespys will receive constructive feedback on their work and gain recognition at both the Pennsylvania Chapter and International Thespian Festival levels.
To enter, students must be inducted Thespians and members of an active troupe. They should choose a category that interests them.
Students may enter more than one Thespy, but each must be in a different category. For example, one solo musical and one duet scene is allowed, but two solo musicals are not.
Due to the multitude of programming and conflict dates auditions and interviews will take place on Friday, October 31, 2025 at 3:15pm simultaneously with One Acts auditions. You may leave as soon as you are done auditioning.
Video submissions are due no later than January 12, 2026. All videos must be uploaded via the OpenWater platform. A $15 submission fee is due at checkout.
Students do not need to attend the Pennsylvania State Conference to participate, but can (at a cost TBA but no more than $450). Students who earn a Superior rating will advance to national adjudication at the International Thespian Festival in June. A trip cost of approximately $1,500.
The camera must show the entire body from below the feet to above the head. Film horizontally in a quiet location with a non-distracting background. Ensure good lighting so that judges can clearly see the student.
Music and Accompaniment
Students performing a song should use a solid accompaniment track such as a piano or karaoke track without vocals. Ensure the judges can hear both the student and the track.
Scene partner placement can be natural. Students do not need to look directly into the camera. Movement should remain visible within the frame.
Props and personal items are not allowed. Exceptions for safe use include: Solo Acting, Musical Theatre Performance, and Musical Theatre Dance may use one chair. Duet Acting, Musical Theatre Performance, and Musical Theatre Dance may use two chairs. Group Acting or Group Musical Theatre may use one table and up to six chairs. Items must be used safely and simply.
Students should wear simple, modest black or dark-colored clothing. Costumes and theatrical makeup are not allowed.
Conduct a sound test before filming. Adjust blocking and camera angle to show all necessary movement. Try multiple takes and submit the strongest version.
Students may upload the video directly to OpenWater or provide a YouTube link. Title the video clearly with the student name, troupe number, and category. Videos should be set to private or unlisted with open access for adjudicators. Watch the video before and after submission to ensure quality.
For Technical Thespys, students will film a presentation, upload portfolio samples, and provide written responses if required. All submissions must follow the category guidelines published by EDTA.
Students should upload high-quality, clear samples, including photos, documents, or diagrams. The portfolio should speak for itself, although students may expand on the work in written responses.
Written responses replace the in-person interview. Students should clearly explain their work and process. These responses account for a significant portion of the final score. Students should review their answers before submitting to ensure clarity and completeness.
All performance material must be EDTA-approved. Using ineligible material will result in disqualification. The approved content list updates annually, so students should check before selecting material.
