Environmental Certificate

How do these competencies apply to the Environmental Certificate?

Seeking Truth: Investigate the myriad effects of human behavior on water, soil, air, etc. Exploring examples of the web of connections in the natural world. Understanding the ways in which nature sustains life and the threats to those systems. Looking at unintended consequences and the debate about the “precautionary principle” in human “advances” in technology and development. How is the term “sustainable” used in a variety of ways and what does it mean in different disciplines and areas of study?

Building Empathy: Building connections and dialogue with differing beliefs and worldviews about the relationship human beings have with other living beings. How do we increase empathy for the suffering of other human and non-human beings due to environmental damage? Environmental impacts are also unavoidable, what is a good balance of engagement but not anxiety? How can we encourage care and understandings that support healthy communities? How can we deal directly with issues of climate injustice, environmental racism and oppression of marginalized communities?

Let Your Life Speak: What are ways you can build resilience by supporting the capacity of natural and social communities to rebound from unintended consequences? How can we remain hopeful of change for the better? How we can we educate others and provide a vision that looks at climate justice, biodiversity, and healthy commons for all? How can we encourage collective actions that support cooperative action to support a sustainable planet?
