Activities

Students must complete a minimum of 80 hours of activity in their respective field of certificate work starting in the summer of their rising 11th grade and ending before SCP begins in their 12th grade year. Activities can be divided into Penn Charter sponsored clubs, service, programming, etc. as well as non-school sponsored activities (trips, events, lectures). A minimum of half of these activities (40) must be Penn Charter sponsored activity hours, and it is the expectation that certificate students find "leadership" opportunities within the school community and beyond.

  • PC sponsored activities means that there is a faculty member who is overseeing the activity/project. You must let the faculty member know that you are using these hours for certificate work, you have some agreed upon number, and the faculty member will "sign off" that the student has successfully completed the hours.

  • Activity hours should ideally be completed at 11th Grade end of semester 1 at 20 hours. If a student does not reach 20 hours this should be discussed and approved by the certificate advisor. Students are required to completed 40 hours of activity at the end of their 11th grade year. During 12th grade year in semester 1 students should ideally reach around 60 hours and if not, this should be discussed and approved by the certificate advisor. It is required at the end of semester 2 prior to the start of the SCP that students reach the 80 hours of activity.

  • Any "immersion" experience which involves a more intensive (3 days or more) engagement through trips, travel, conferences, etc., whether school sponsored or not, can not count for more than 20 hours. Only two 20 hour intensive experiences are allowed as part of the total 80 hour.

  • All non-school sponsored activities need to be recorded in the form below and it is up to the certificate advisor what would count or not. It is required of students to inform the certificate advisor what non-school sponsored activity ideas and proposals one might have before participating.
