PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical Education courses focus on developing improved fitness and knowledge through participation in team and lifetime activities. Team activities are emphasized in PE 9 & PE 10 with a transition to more lifetime activities in the PE 11/12 course. Physical fitness pre and post tests are administered each semester to assess each student’s level. Written assessments will also be administered to assess the knowledge component of each unit.
53501 STRENGTH AND CONDITONING S1 (53551 EARLY BIRD SECTION)
GRADE: 9, 10, 11, 12 | SCORE: Non-Weighted | PHS CREDIT: 1 | SEMESTER | ELECTIVE
The focus will be on weight training, speed, agility, flexibility and plyometrics to enhance athletic performance. There will be an emphasis on nutrition, and writing goals. The format will include weight room workouts, speed, agility, and plyometric workouts, along with classroom discussions, writing programs, and many physical education concepts. Assessments will be both physical and written. Individual expectations of students are to be highly motivated to complete their workouts in a timely manner and make significant strength gains. This is a higher level weight training course with little or no modifications for in season and out of season athletes. Note: Freshman basketball players will not be able to take the early bird section offered due to morning practices.

This course is an elective, daily, physical education course open to juniors and seniors. It is offered for one semester only and worth one credit. The format is a group exercise class which incorporates cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and toning, and knowledge of fitness activities. Students will be responsible to gain the fitness level and knowledge to teach their peers as a final assessment. Students will be competent and confident participating in an exercise class outside of school.

PREREQUISITE: Group Fitness 1
This course will incorporate the same exercise components as Group Fitness 1. Students in this second level will have an increased responsibility to lead classes and teach their peers about the benefits of daily exercise.

There is also an emphasis on goal setting, creating and implementing an exercise program and evelooping and understanding of activities.

This will be a continuation of skill acquisition of lifetime activities through units. There will be an emphasis on cardiovascular endurance improvement. Written assessments will be used to check for understanding of rules, terminology and strategy for each activity.

Peer helpers must be approved as helpers by the teacher committee.
This class is designed to provide physical education instruction to special needs students with assistance from peer student helpers. The focus of this class is to build peer relationships, provide opportunities to work on social skills and learn appropriate social behavior through peer interaction. The physical education activities are modified to meet the needs of students with disabilities and provide opportunities to participate in group activities as well as organized games. Students considering this class should be seen as leaders and have the ability to work in small groups and be able to lead small group activities. You will be working 1 on 1 with students who have special needs. Your daily attendance is a must for this class. Students will be expected to journal as a part of their written grade.
