PREREQUISITE: Drawing 2 or Painting 2


Drawing/Painting courses focus on the inter-relationships that occur between drawing and painting using a variety of media and techniques, emphasizing observation and interpretation of the visual environment. These courses typically include applying the elements of art and principles of design, along with a study of art and artists from a worldwide perspective, and instruction in the critique process. Advanced courses may encourage students to refine their creative process and develop their own artistic styles following and breaking from traditional conventions.

61350 CERAMICS 1

Ceramics 1 introduces the student to clay as a medium to create functional and decorative pieces of artwork. The student will construct ceramic projects using the different hand building methods of pinch, coil, and slab. Students will also practice creating pottery on the wheel. Academic requirements include in-class studio time, completion of ceramic projects, participation in class critiques, Visual Journal entries, and written examinations over techniques and vocabulary. Students should be aware that they will most likely need to spend a little time outside of scheduled class time in the ceramics studio to keep up with the course work.

PREREQUISITE: Ceramics 1 with a passing score of a C or higher.

Ceramics 2 is intended to continue the curriculum of Ceramics 1 to a higher level. More time will be spent on the potter’s wheel with emphasis placed on creating higher quality finished products. Different clay bodies, glazes, and firing techniques may be explored as time allows. Academic requirements include in-class studio time, completion of ceramic projects, participation in class critiques, and written examinations over techniques and vocabulary. Students should be aware that they will most likely need to spend a little time outside of scheduled class time in the ceramics studio to keep up with the course work.

Design Foundations focuses on the application of Elements and Principles of Design in art work. Students will explore a variety of media and materials in the realm of two and three-dimensional works of art. Painting, printmaking, collage are examples of some of the mediums students will work in. Academic requirements include in-class studio time, project assignments in class, keeping a visual journal, participation in class critiques, and written examinations over techniques and vocabulary. Students should be aware that they will most likely need to spend some time outside of scheduled class time on their projects to keep up with the course work.

Drawing 1 students will explore several types of drawing media (graphite, color pencil, pen & ink, charcoal) and participate in a variety of drawing tasks designed to help them to begin developing basic skills in drawing what they see. Observational drawing and Linear Perspective will be emphasized. Academic expectations include in-class studio time, drawing assignments in class, independent projects, keeping a visual journal, participation in class critiques, as well as written examinations over technique and vocabulary. Drawing 2 is a continuation of the goals and objectives of Drawing 1 with emphasis on composition and complexity of detail. Observational Drawing will be emphasized. Academic expectations include in-class studio time, drawing assignments in class, independent projects, keeping a visual journal, participation in class critiques, as well as written examinations over technique and vocabulary. Students should be aware that they will most likely need to spend some time outside of scheduled class time on their projects to keep up with the course work.

Painting 1 is a beginning level painting course in which color theory and materials are emphasized. Students will explore different styles of painting while learning about the acrylic medium. Painting 2 is a continuation of the goals and objectives of Painting 1. More time will be devoted to composition development and refinement of technique, as well as exploration in other paint media. Academic requirements include in-class studio time, painting assignments in class, Independent Projects, keeping a visual journal, participation in class critiques, and written examinations over techniques and vocabulary. Students should be aware that they will most likely need to spend some time outside of scheduled class time on their projects to keep up with the course work.

Peer Art is a class that meets in conjunction with “Adaptive Art” which is developed for students with special needs and gives them the ability to express their creative individuality through the visual arts.


Students enrolled in Peer Art will be working as Peer Helpers, who will work one-on-one with the students with special needs (Adaptive Art Students.). The Peer Helpers modify tools, materials and to assist the Adaptive Art students with creating artwork.


The Peer Helpers meet for class daily, while the Adaptive Art students with special needs will attend this class three times per week.

The Peer Helpers will be responsible for: learning about the art concepts & making the class projects, working with students with special needs, keeping a log of all activities, interactions, and experiences with the Adaptive Art students. The Peer Art Students should be aware that their attendance and participation is critical for the Adaptive Art Students.

Printmaking is a class that will engage the student with different methods of printmaking. Forms of Relief, Intaglio, and Screen Printmaking may be explored. Sculpture Foundations is similar to Design Foundations. Students will have the goals to apply the Elements and Principles of Design to art in the round, both realistic and abstract. The curriculum will consist of working with both additive and subtractive techniques of sculpture making. A variety of materials such as paper, wire, ceramic, plaster, glass, and wood may be explored. Academic requirements include in-class studio time & sculpture projects, keeping a visual journal, participation in class critiques and written examinations over vocabulary.

61310 TRADITIONAL FINE ART CRAFTS

Traditional Fine Art Crafts class will encompass more traditional, craft-based art forms - where specific skills and tools are needed. Some examples of traditional crafts that may be explored: wire jewelry, bookmaking, art glass, paper quilling. The student will develop technical skills and familiarize themselves with the functions of visual elements as they create an individual work of art. Academic requirements include in-class studio time, class assignments in class, keeping a visual journal, participation in class critiques, and written examinations over techniques and vocabulary.
