Course Offerings Sheet

IOWA HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC ASSOCIATION - ARTICLE VI - ELIGIBILITY

    • Section 1. Junior-senior High School pupils must be doing passing work in 20 semester hours and must have done 20 semester hours passing work the preceding semester to be eligible to participate in the festivals of the Iowa High School Music Association. Grade pupils must be currently passing 3/4 of their academic subjects and must have passed in 3/4 of their academic subjects the preceding semester to be eligible.

    • The maximum period of eligibility while in grades 7 and 8 shall be 4 semesters. The max period of eligibility while in grades 9 through 12 shall be 8 semesters. Pupils below the 9th grade may not participate in solo events.

    • A student shall be ineligible for participation after he/she has attained their 20th birthday.

    • Students must be enrolled and in good standing in a school that is a member and in good standing with the Iowa High School Music Association.

    • A soloist, except piano, must be a member of the appropriate high school musical organization, if such exists, and must appear with that organization if it participates in any of the programs of the Association.

DROPPING & ADDING BAND, CHOIR & ORCHESTRA

Students may add/drop music courses following the protocol within the student handbook. The protocol states the following: Courses can be added within the first 5 days of the start of the semester. Courses can be dropped within the first 10 days of the start of the semester if a student's schedule still has the minimum requirement of 6 courses.

61601/61602 BAND

GRADE: 9, 10, 11, 12 | SCORE: Pass/No Pass (70% + is passing) | CREDIT: 1 | SEMESTER | ELECTIVE


Membership requires participation in the marching band during first quarter and during Tulip Time as well as participation in a concert band during second, third and most of fourth quarter. Minimum requirements must be met such as: rehearsal attendance (Marching Band rehearses at 7:15 each morning from the first day of school until the end of first quarter), weekly individual or group lessons, performance attendance, performing to the student’s capabilities on large ensemble music, and extra duties that are included in band membership.

Additional groups or organizations band students may participate in:

  • Pep Band: (5-6 home conference games)

  • Jazz I: (3 hours of rehearsal per week)

  • Jazz II: (2 hours of rehearsal per week)

  • Jazz III: (2 hours of rehearsal per week)

  • Small Ensemble: (2-month study prior to small group contest)

  • Solo Work: (designed for small group contest)

  • Color Guard: (during Marching Band and for students in grades 10-12 only)

  • Jazz Combo: (depending on interest)

Performances:

  • 9/10 Concert Band: 3 home concerts

  • 11/12 Concert Band: 3 home concerts and commencement

  • Marching Band: 4-5 home half-time shows, 4 competitions, 3 parades

  • Jazz I: Membership by audition: multiple home performances and four competitions

  • Jazz II: 3 competitions, 3 home performance

  • Jazz III: 2 competitions, 3 home performance

  • Pep Band: 5-6 home conference games

AUDITION REQUIRED - Spring audition for incoming 10, 11, and 12th-grade students


Membership

festival, and contains all of the all-state participants

GRADE: 9, 10, 11, 12 | SCORE: Pass/No Pass (70% + is passing | PHS CREDIT: 1 | SEMESTER | ELECTIVE


Incoming freshmen are required to take orchestra lessons both semesters of their freshman year unless they study regularly with a private teacher. Individual lessons for 10-12 grade students are optional. Membership requirements include participation in daily rehearsals and mandatory attendance in scheduled school concerts; i.e. October, December, February, April, and May. Additional performances are set up at the discretion of the director. Orchestra students will have opportunities to prepare for additional performances in the following: Iowa All-State Music Auditions - October; IHSMA Solo/Small Ensemble Contest - March; Jefferson Invitational Large Group Contest - April; Tulip Time Strolling Strings - May.
