Course Registration & Information

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE

In late October, students will be asked to make tentative course selections for the upcoming school year. These course selections help build our master schedule and decide the necessary numbers of course sections and teachers for the upcoming school year. This process is very extensive and timely!

Students will be able to preview their schedules in May on Campus Student. Course adds/drops to a student’s schedule can be requested via the Google Form emailed out by the counselors in August.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE REGISTRATION PROCESS:

COURSE SCHEDULING PROCESS:

CLASS LOAD

Students in 9th and 10th grade are required to take seven (7) classes each semester

Students in 11th and 12th grade are required to take six (6) classes each semester.

DROPPING OR ADDING CLASSES

The first five (5) days of each semester may be used to add or drop elective classes. After the tenth (10) day in a semester, courses dropped will be assigned a letter grade of an “F”

REPEATING A COURSE

Students may repeat courses they have taken in order to improve their skills or knowledge. A course in which a student received a passing grade may be repeated within two semesters. If the course is not offered during the next two semesters, the course may be repeated during the next semester that it is offered. Only three courses in which a passing grade was earned may be repeated during the student's high school career.

When a course is repeated, both grades will appear on the student's transcript. However, only the highest grade will be used in grade point average (GPA) calculations, and duplicate credit will not be awarded.

COURSE DESCRIPTION INFORMATION

COURSE NUMBERS

The last digit in the course number informs you which semester it is offered. A course ending in a "1" is only offered the first semester. A course ending in a "2" is only offered the second semester. Courses ending in a "0" are semester-long courses offered either first or second semester.

COURSE TITLE

Course titles reflect the core area of study within that course. Some course titles include special designations such as Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and College Credit Courses.

GRADE LEVEL

Courses are designed for specific grade levels. These are listed under the title of the course.

SCORES

Credits for passing grades (scores) are issued at the end of the semester. Mid-term and Progress scores are to be regarded as grades in progress. A student’s Final Grade is the only score recorded on a student’s permanent record (transcript). Grades received in all classes are weighted as follows:

4.0 point scale        4.5 point scale     Courses graded on 4.5 point scale

Grade point average (GPA) is calculated based on the grade earned in the courses taken. Term GPA is released at semester. Cumulative GPA is based on all semester grades earned from the 9th grade through the second semester of the 12th grade. All courses are included in determining the GPA, except those graded as a “Pass/No Pass” course.

COURSE CREDIT

PHS offers courses by semesters. Each semester of a course is worth (1.0) credit. If a course is year-long, passing students will receive one credit per semester.
