CYFS uses a justice-minded orientation to understand both the history and contemporary social positions of children, youth, and families. The curriculum centers dynamic analysis of race, class, gender, ability, sexualities, and development as factors shaping the experiences of children, youth and families.
Students will learn about what qualities and skills, both professional and interpersonal, lead to effective youth work. Child and Family Studies students will be able to access, analyze, apply, and articulate theoretical knowledge to make professional decisions that improve the lives of children, youth, and families within their social system, recognize oppressive forces that hinder their positive development, professional standards of ethical conduct, and role of change agents regarding issues, policies, & community.
We prepare students for careers and graduate study in many fields connected to children, youth, families, and their communities:
* Elementary and secondary education
* Early childhood education
* Social work
